More people signed up to cycle to work scheme, therefore less people travelling to work by car. Improved staff moral, as it is a good staff benefit.
There was an identified need at all 5 sites within the NHS Trust for more and secure cycle parking facilities, to accommodate initial cycle demand and to encourage more staff to get on their bikes. The first target of the project was to get increased provision at the Trust HQ, catering for those occupying that building and the main UCH site opposite. This was to install parking for 40 bikes, with an additional 20 or 30 in the following months. To make the storage secure, access is for staff only, and via a swipe card system, with authorisation added where requested to the usual swipe pass. The parking has been tailored to the site and painted NHS blue. In addition there are also 80 unsecured spaces for patients and staff.
Phase 1 opened at the Trust HQ on 24th June
There were no direct business reasons for starting the project. It does relates to the Cycle to Work guarantee scheme and the Environmental Strategy
Facilities – for the installation of security for the swipe card system and support, UCLH Charity Trust for matched funding, and Bike Dock Solutions, provider and installer of bike stands.
Hope to be able to provide in the future more showers, lockers, racks and some heated clothes drying racks.
Bike racks and fitting costs were 2,500, plus staff time (1 day) and Building Managers time (0.5 days). Luckily the new security system was paid for and installed by the Trust Facilities Team, using the allocated environmental budget.
