To increase the number of spaces to lock bicycles to across our sites.  The car parking had recently been taken out of the main square at St Barts, and it was an ideal opportunity to promote more sustainable means of transport.  As the site is protected by English Heritage, a solution had to be found that did not require any change to the existing features i.e. no bolting or digging!

The solution was a new and innovative bicycle locking system: Plantlock - designed and manufactured locally. For more details please see:

There will be 4 plantlocks at The Royal London and hopefully 20 at St Barts.

Supports the Trusts' Green Transport Plan and their desire to migrate travel from cars and public transport to more sustainable travel choices. Supports staff in maintaining healthy lifestyles. Helps increase biodiversity in an inner London habitat. No planning permission required for plantlocks.

The Front Yard Company who are able to tailor and supply the locks, and Envido, who as part of the Health, Welbeing and Green Living Week have arranged the installation of the first plantlock.

Stepney Farm who are involved with initial planting and horticultural advice.

No tool as such - but we will be using the intranet to advertise and also we consulted with the BUG to gauge requirements - a survey identified the need for more and secure storage units.

Luckily alot of the senior management team cycle and so were supportive of new cycle initiatives.  There were some negative attitudes to this sort of alternative cycle lock, but attitudes are improving all the time.

Funding is always an issue initially.
