Initial information and proposal

In common with other NHS Trusts and large employers, the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is expected to develop and implement a Travel Plan to promote more sustainable travel to the hospital site/s. In particular, the Trust is keen to encourage the more efficient use of the car and to reduce the number of vehicles travelling to the hospital site/s - and on the roads generally.

LiftshareThe Trust implemented the Liftshare Car Share Scheme several years ago, the overall aim being to lead by example in mitigating pressures on car parking at the Sutton site whilst reducing its carbon footprint.

The Trust is planning to re-launch the Car Share Scheme. The Scheme is part of a larger initiative which has been developed by Transport for London (TfL) and the South West London Transport Conference (SWELTRAC), a partnership of ten London boroughs. The actual system has been developed by liftshare.com, a company which specialises in car share schemes.

Car sharing is when two or more people share a car and travel together. It allows people to benefit from the convenience of the car whilst significantly reducing travel costs and road congestion. An organised Car Share Scheme, such as this one, raises awareness that sometimes people are making a similar car journey – and gives people the option to consider sharing if they wish.

The benefits of car sharing are numerous:• Saves you money - sharing a daily commute saves many members over £1000 a year.• Reduces the number of cars on the roads - resulting in less congestion, less pollution and fewer parking problems• Provides a real solution to the transport problems of rural areas• Gives employees and employers more transport options• Reduces the need for a private car

Target: 30% reduction

Proposed Timescales:

Quarter 1: - Run an in-house survey with a prize draw to establish staff’s awareness of the Liftshare scheme.Quarter 2: - Organise an information session week to address any questions and issues of staffQuarter 3: - Organise a social event inviting Liftshare users to “bring a buddy”.Quarter 4: - Liftshare week promotion.

Update:

Following initial conversations, funding was found elsewhere for the Travel Plan Survey and the bid to the Pan London fund for the Liftshare proposal was reduced.
