Proposal:
To establish a culture and use of Cycles for the well being of staff, students patient and all visitors to the trust and in doing so demonstrate the trusts commitment to the environment:
To capitalize on the existing number of cyclist who utilize the trust and to demonstrate our commitment and support for cycling as a preferred mode of travel :
1. communicating our commitment to cycling as the preferred mode of transport 2. engaging with all users of the trust.
Vision
This fits in with the following values/vision:
1. to provide the most relevant and accessible services that best encourages the use of cycle2. to foster a participatory culture that encourages our staff to feel ownership of the organization and its commitment to the environment
Scope
We expect that the proposed cycle maintenance bay will be delivered within existing financial resources but will require investment in terms of staff time.
Summer 2011 Update:
Following on from the successful award of the bids, we set a target of April 2011 to identify a space that would be safe, clean and weather resistant within the existing car parking compliment. The remit was determined by the feedback; on why and when people would be likely to consider cycling as a preferred mode of transport.
The main reason given to consider using a cycle for getting to work was the weather. Safety was also considered plus how to repair or maintain your cycle when on site.
1. To identify and create a safe and secure environment for cycle users to repair and maintain their cycles whenever they had cause or need to visit the trust.2. Claim the space and set up mechanisms to administer the scheme.3. Communicate the creation of the space and engage with non cyclists in the positive benefits of cycling.
The trust has been through procuring resources via Transport for London, and investment of staff time, now has integrated a dedicated maintenance cycle bay. This has ingrained the cycle friendly culture and enabled a reduction in the carbon footprint with the removal of a car parking space.
SUCCESS: The cycle maintenance bay has been a big success with those existing cyclists within the trust. It has also encouraged those new members and visitors to consider cycle use as their main mode of transport
It is clear that the message has to be repeatedly given out and that identifying and capturing dedicated cycle champions is the best way forward. Cycle buddies are actively being sought for those staff members who are thinking of converting to cycling as their preferred mode of transport.
